YIHOO NOR 116 is a new non-halogenated flame retardant designed to provide flame retardant efficacy to polyolefins, especially to polyolefin fibers.
As an NOR HALS, It also acts as a light stabilizer. It is effective at low concentrations compared to traditional flame retardants. Since it is melt processable, it Is less likely to compromise the mechanical properties of palyolefin fibers.
Powerful synergies can be realized when used in conjunction with some traditional flame retardant materials.
Pictures to the right visualize the burning behavior of a polypropylene fabric without flame retardant (pictures 1), in comparison with fabrics stabilized with either 1% YIHOO NOR 116 (pictures 2) or 2% DBDPO (decabromo diphenyl oxide) and 0.5% YIHOO NOR 116 (pictures 3). The tests were performed in a fire-chamber according to NFPA 701-1996 (vertical burn test) requiring flame application for 45 seconds.
The time Intervals show that the fabric without flame retardant keeps burning - whereas the fabrics containing YIHOO NOR 116 self-extinguish.
Flame retardant tests like DIN 4102/B2, MVSS 302, NFPA 701 were passed with the use of YIHOO NOR 116 in polyolefin fibers and fabrics. Other potential applications are for example polyolefin films, tapes and molded articles.
YIHOO NOR 116 is efficient at very low concentrations of 0.5 - 1.5%
Combinations of YIHOO NOR 116 with traditional flame retardants show a synergistic effect. As a consequence, it is possible to achieve a significant reduction of the level of traditional flame retardants.
Since flame retardant performance can be affected by factors such as fabric construction and pigments, this approach can improve performance when the demands are greater. Molded articles also benefit from this combination approach.
Actual specific flame retardant performance must be tested on the final product according to the required specifications.
As an additional benefit YIHOO NOR 116 acts as a light stabilizer, comparable to a premium high molecular weight HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer). It is also an effective light stabilizer when used in combination with halogenated flame retardants, unlike traditional HALS.
